Remembering Lilly Pulitzer

Posted on April 8, 2013

lillypulitzerinmemory

We mourn the loss of Palm Beach legend Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau, who passed away yesterday at 81. Born from practical sensibilities, Lilly began creating simple shift dresses in 1959; the loud tropical prints disguised the citrus stains from her juice stand. Her eponymous line took off after First Lady (and prep school classmate) Jackie Kennedy sported a Lilly dress while on vacation. Lilly’s designs captured the casual joie de vivre associated with island living; they quickly became a resortwear staple and a calling card for the preppy Southampton-to-South Florida set. While the women’s designs were seen as demure staples to pair with pearls and Jack Rogers, the limited collection of menswear through the “Men’s Stuff” label was peacocking at its finest–with her extravagant prints festooning “go-to-hell” blazers and pants. But Lilly the woman was more than her namesake brand. She was known around the Island as a gracious hostess, often throwing impromptu brunches for her many children and grandchildren and their friends. She will be dearly missed, both in the Palm Beach community she called home and by her multitude of fans, who live to carry on her legacy for the next generation.

Running Mates: Max Sinsteden

Posted on April 4, 2013

This is the fourth post in our monthly series “Running Mates,” showcasing chic comrades of N&P for their sartorial smarts and their enterprising insight. This month, we feature decorator Max Sinsteden of Olasky & Sinsteden, who previously appeared on N&P for his healthy smoothie skills.

–

A devoted aesthete, decorator and stylist Max Sinsteden has been designing ever since he and Van tacked up nautical charts in his dorm room at Choate. His knack for smaller spaces landed his compact college digs in New York Magazine–and trust us, you’ve seen it on Pinterest. Experiences working with decorating greats like Charlotte Moss andDavid Easton led him to start his eponymous company, Olasky & Sinsteden, where he and partner Catherine Olasky spruce up homes from Houston to Hyde Park. While beautiful interior work is his calling card, we also love his eye-catching personal style, where bright staples and a little DIY knowhow (custom grosgrain taped blazers, anyone?) make Max a master of Connecticut prep. Here, he unpacks his Globe-Trotter trunk, styling a Palm Beach tableau around a vintage wicker-lined Fiat Jolly.

Pink Gators

A few months back, Lilly Pulitzer invited us to the opening of their gorgeous new store in Tysons Galleria, which featured handpainted decor by Lilly’s talented print designers and fun Palm Beach-themed fitting rooms (check them out on our Instagram feed). Van picked out this green gator-print bow tie, which would look right at home at Easter brunch this weekend.

Chubbies Rock

We’re big fans of Chubbies, the super-soft stonewashed short shorts whose supporters spread the word about “thigh liberation” with the motto “Sky’s out, thighs out.” Available in a rainbow of vibrant brights and faded pastels, these are shorts you’ll want to live in all summer long. Chubbies was kind enough to send us a few to try–we picked the classic Palm Beach color combo of pink & green for our spring break trip to Florida. Grab a pair of your own and banish baggy cargo shorts for good.

Go-to-hell pants AND a go-to-hell blazer? Unadvisable, unless you’re in the pastel-and-print-happy playland of Palm Beach, Florida. The blazer was a serious find ($50) back when Ralph’s outlets used to be chock-full of the good stuff, and the pants are a thrifted 70s era Lilly pair that were slimmed down at the tailor.

Snaps From: Palm Beach

Snaps from Palm Beach

Over the holidays in Palm Beach, Florida, N&P: took Chester and Summer to the beach to play; admired the goods at Island Company, Stubbs & Wootton, Lilly Pulitzer, and Gentlemen’s Corner (especially the custom Palm Beach flasks from Smathers & Branson); chatted with the founder of Tkees at Rapunzel’s Closet; thrifted at The Church Mouse; coordinated our Chubbies with our needlepoint slippers (natch); cocktailed at HMF at The Breakers Hotel; and rang in the new year right poolside at a friend’s house. 2013 is off to a great start!

On Sunday, Van rounded up some of the Palm Beach crew for a picnic lunch by the pool. The afternoon celebrated the end of a great year with tea sandwiches, cool cucumber cocktails, and sunshine. While the refreshments and company were great, the real life of the party was Van’s puppy Chester, who moved from lap to lap with plenty of kisses for his new friends.

Lilly P. at Sea

Last Saturday in Palm Beach, the young and young at heart stepped out in style for the 2012 Red Cross Beach Bash at The Beach Club, sponsored by Lilly Pulitzer and the American Red Cross. Guests donned duds in accordance with the “Lilly or Louder” dress code, which included vibrant colors, bold prints, and–of course–Lilly dresses, pants, and blazers, running the gamut from vintage (aka borrowed from mom or dad’s closet) to as-yet-unseen spring 2013 Lilly looks. Guests drank festive Tito’s cocktails while dancing poolside next to live mermaids and inflatable sea urchin sculptures–all in keeping with the event’s “Under the Sea” theme.

The Necessary List: Palm Beach

Posted on December 7, 2012

N&P presents your guide to surviving the Palm Beach social season … THE SCENE STAPLES: The clubby atmosphere at Michael McCarty’s packs in the preps for alfresco G&Ts while they scope the valet scene. Opened just a few seasons ago, Buccan gave the island’s scene a shot in the arm with Clay Conley’s inventive American menu (shortrib empanadas and mushroom pizza, anyone?). Still the toughest table in town, locals can’t get enough of the Palm Beach Grill‘s fresh seafood and steakhouse dishes. For an off-island treat, hit up Rocco’s Tacos in West Palm for yummy Mexican cuisine and a pitcher of Ranch Water. // THE NEWCOMERS: Amici Market now has a full service juice bar, perfect for balancing out the egg BLTs at Green’s Pharmacy next door. Dan Ponton, who runs scene-y supper club Club Colette, will open greasy spoon Pickles later this month in the old Hamburger Heaven space. Grand dame hotel The Breakers debuted its homage to Mad Men-era cocktailing with HMF, named for Henry Morrison Flagler. // THE SHOPPING: Find new and vintage home pieces at the well-curated Mecox on Dixie Highway, West Palm’s fabled antiques row. Pick up swim separates and casualwear at Island Company, which has expanded to a larger location on Worth Avenue. For vintage scores, try The Church Mouse or Groovy Palm Beach Vintage, both stocked with Gucci, Pucci, and Pulitzer. // ESSENTIAL READING: In The Spirit of Palm Beach; Madness Under the Royal Palms; Palm Beach Entertaining

Necessary: Beach Blanket Bingo

Posted on June 22, 2012

Summer’s in full swing–and this weekend we’ve got a heat wave to boot. One of our favorite purchases that’s already been in heavy rotation at the beach is this linen beach blanket ($48) from Steven Alan. Great for keeping cool on the sand or for a picnic in the park. (Psst–headed to someone’s summer share? Bring one of these for the hosts and you’re sure to be invited back.)
