Local Libations

Posted on January 17, 2013

drinklocal

Think local, drink local. While we may not have representation in Congress, the DC area now has plenty of options for getting your booze on. // Drive out to nearby Loudoun County, Virginia for a taste of the organic spirits at Catoctin Creek Distillers. On the menu: moonshine, rye, brandy, gorgeous country vistas. // Take in the inauguration festivities from the comfort of your couch while cracking open a local brew from DC Brau. // Tour DC’s first distillery in nearly a century, New Columbia Distillers in Ivy City, who produce Green Hat Gin in small batches. As legend has it, the namesake “Man in the Green Hat” supplied swill to Congress during Prohibition. // And to serve it all, head to Old Town Alexandria to browse the shelves at The Hour, a shop dedicated to gorgeous vintage barware.

We’re thrilled to be included today in the Washington Post Express for the second part of a feature on home bars (check out the first, which appeared in the Post’s Fashion Washington, here). If you’re in DC, pick up a copy! We’ll have more photos from the shoot later on today.

The Dapper Home Bar, Part I

Posted on September 11, 2012

Van was happy to lend a hand to Fashion Washington for a feature on outfitting your home bar in style. (Hint: start with a chic cart from Society Social.) Van’s cheeky comments are featured alongside Victoria Vergason’s–the owner of The Hour in Alexandria, VA, a well-curated store specializing in vintage barware. Get your recipe fix from Ms. Vergason’s Capitol Cocktails, a new book on DC drinking. Not enough to wet your whistle? Be sure to watch this space for photos of N&P’s own hunt country-inspired bar cart.

Snaps From: Watch Hill

Posted on August 22, 2012

Mother and I had a wonderful couple of days at the Ocean House in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. Getting there was half the fun, with a ferry across the Long Island Sound. We enjoyed checking out the gorgeous oceanfront homes and sipping Southsides on the veranda. Our favorite beachside drink, however, was the delicious (and low-calorie) Ocean House Colada. Check out our take on the recipe below.

Summertime Sip

Posted on May 17, 2012

Outdoor summer cocktailing isn’t the time to dig out your molecular mixology kit–your time should be spent on the porch, not in the kitchen fixing drinks. Aperol–a bitter orange flavored Italian aperitif–is now much easier to come by, and Orangina is readily available too. Mix the two together for an unfussy summer drink that’s super easy to make.
