Derby Day Dreamin’

Posted on May 1, 2013

derby

We frequently find ourselves window shopping at one of our favorite online destinations, 1stdibs, a marketplace featuring some of the best antiques, fine art, and vintage fashion in the world. With the Kentucky Derby and Virginia Gold Cup kicking off the spring steeplechase season this Saturday, we took an extravagant look at how we’d throw a Derby Day party–no holds barred. Whether you’re betting big on Verrazano, donning a Derby hat, or just enjoying a frosty mint julep, here’s to a fun and fabulous day at the races.

Running Mates: Max Sinsteden

Posted on April 4, 2013

This is the fourth post in our monthly series “Running Mates,” showcasing chic comrades of N&P for their sartorial smarts and their enterprising insight. This month, we feature decorator Max Sinsteden of Olasky & Sinsteden, who previously appeared on N&P for his healthy smoothie skills.

–

A devoted aesthete, decorator and stylist Max Sinsteden has been designing ever since he and Van tacked up nautical charts in his dorm room at Choate. His knack for smaller spaces landed his compact college digs in New York Magazine–and trust us, you’ve seen it on Pinterest. Experiences working with decorating greats like Charlotte Moss andDavid Easton led him to start his eponymous company, Olasky & Sinsteden, where he and partner Catherine Olasky spruce up homes from Houston to Hyde Park. While beautiful interior work is his calling card, we also love his eye-catching personal style, where bright staples and a little DIY knowhow (custom grosgrain taped blazers, anyone?) make Max a master of Connecticut prep. Here, he unpacks his Globe-Trotter trunk, styling a Palm Beach tableau around a vintage wicker-lined Fiat Jolly.

DSC_5286DSC_5209 DSC_5272Navy blue and cuoio leather is a favorite color combination of mine. The palette pairs well with this old-school canvas and leather Coach suitcase, which has been my favorite piece so far this spring.

After last week’s rather disappointing snowfall, Lauren and I decided to play make believe–dreaming up a few après ski outfits that wouldn’t look out of place in Vail or Whistler (but certainly did in Glover Park). Pour yourself a toddy and play along at  home.

Winter Wheat

Posted on January 9, 2013

grayturtle2grayturtle3grayturtle1White can be difficult to pull off in January (Lauren does it with aplomb), but when I found these off-white cords on sale at Rugby, I took the plunge. Ground winter white with neutral colors–like navy, brown, and gray–and you’re set (you want to avoid this look). As you may know, Rugby is sadly closing its doors soon. They were my go-to brand for pants, as the fit was amazing and the price was right. Get them here before they’re gone for good.

Running Mates: Elizabeth & Paige Hill (Part I)

Posted on November 28, 2012

This is the second post in our monthly series “Running Mates,” showcasing chic comrades of N&P for their sartorial smarts and their enterprising insight. This month, we caught up with sisters Elizabeth and Paige Hill, Californians brightening up the District with their sunny dispositions and colorful closets.

–

Pictured above is our friend Elizabeth Hill (left). Elizabeth is the Director of Corporate and Social Responsibility at Rubicon Global, a sustainable waste stream solutions company. Elizabeth’s passion for reducing waste also influences her wardrobe: she invests in long-lasting, classic apparel rather than trendy items that can end up getting tossed out at the end of the season. Elizabeth loves vintage jackets, jewel-toned sweaters, demure party dresses, and anything in black. She swears by her Cole Haan pumps because they are feminine yet comfortable–allowing her to dance all night.

ON ELIZABETH • JACKET: Yves Saint Laurent (vintage, borrowed from mom) // SWEATER: J.Crew // SKIRT: Vince // HEELS: Cole Haan // EARRINGS: Vintage {similar} // SUNGLASSES: Thierry Lasry {similar} // SCARF: Hermès // BUCKLE RING: Vintage {similar}

–

Elizabeth’s younger sister, Paige (right), arrived in Washington three years ago by way of Elizabeth’s sofa. Shortly after arriving, Paige took a job as a journalist and met a handsome D.C. native who will become her husband this February. Paige currently covers national health care issues for a daily publication—which means very early mornings (Ray-Bans and Laura Mercier concealer), long days (ballet flats), and caffeine (Dolcezza lattes). But that doesn’t stop Paige from bringing vintage flair to the office—after all, it was Rosalind Russell in the 1940′s film “His Girl Friday” who first inspired her to the career. Paige loves anything with a story behind it–be it a necklace from travels in Central America or Art Deco handbags handed down through the family–and living near Georgetown’s antique stores only fuels her passion for unique finds.

ON PAIGE • JACKET: Zara {similar} // TURTLENECK: Splendid // SKIRT: BCBG {different color} // BOOTS: Cole Haan {similar} // CLUTCH: YSL {similar} // TIGHTS: Wolford // SUNGLASSES: Ray-Ban // JADE NECKLACE W/MAYAN CALENDAR: Central America find

Ascot Park

Posted on October 26, 2012

Shake the ascot from it’s stuffier roots–hint, you don’t have to wear it with a velvet dinner jacket–and it’s a good way to keep your neck warm on a blustery day. Like the one I’m wearing–done in wool with little brown foxes on it. Might come in handy for the snowicane that’s headed our way (unless you prefer something heavier).

Packing the Perfect Dopp Kit

Posted on October 9, 2012

A spontaneous trip calls for having a well-stocked Dopp kit at the ready. I find that having mine constantly packed ensures that you aren’t scrambling to find a 3 oz. container for your moisturizer at the 11th hour. Here’s what I keep in mine–and below, three ways to pack it all up.
